A mid-afternoon snack for a Point Lobos squirrel
I took this photo at Point Lobos, a wildlife reserve in Carmel, California, on what was to become a big day for nature photos: we watched a humpback whale playing out in the ocean and a couple dozen brown pelicans diving through the waves for bait fish, then saw some baby seal pups nursing, photographed the blue breeding plumage on a group of cormorants, and heard the sounds of an otter cracking a clam against a rock. Yes! I saw this squirrel at the end of the day, and I was really surprised to see it making short work of a pine cone. I must have been awfully tired, because I realized later, after downloading the picture that he was actually nibbling on a blackberry. Makes so much more sense!

precious photo…you’ll perhaps find my reaction amusing. I am such a caretaker: I thought, oh no, the thorns on the pine cone are pricking his/her mouth… quick, go to the feedstore, buy fifty lbs of sweet feed for horses and scatter it there in those trees…. !
Another option…just flaked corn, any old thing you have around the house, just so he doesn’t resort to pine cones… I know, I need help…
Seriously, Maggie, super photo. I have a new post that’s a mock interview of myself– an exercise I thought of you might enjoy trying!
best… j
