What a nice surprise to see the by-the-wind-sailors at the beach! It’s been years since they’ve drifted into our shores. Their Latin name, Velella Velella, is just as charming. These are animals, relatives of jellyfish, but these have no way of self-propulsion. They float on the ocean’s surface, moving with the wind in their sails.

24 hours in San Francisco = 1 stroll along the Embarcadero + 2 visits to the SFMOMA + 3 restaurants. Not to mention a room with a view. Such a fun getaway and we did a tiny bit of work as well!

I just finished my first quilt commission, a set of #kawandi style placemats with fabric from @kaffefassettstudio and @brandonmably for my mom. I was visiting her in St. Louis working on my own series and she was enchanted by the stitching. I told her about taking a class from @therootconnection and being inspired by @erin_lee_gafill_art. She asked for a set of placemats in her colors, so we went to the Quilted Fox to choose fabrics. Thread from her stash, batting from mine. They are off I. The mail for her now, and I’m so excited to see them on her table!

We wandered through the understory, over downed branches and across muddy trails, and Victoria helped us to find bears head, cat tongue, witches butter, turkey tails, corals, caps, and cups, in all shades of orange, yellow, purole, brown, and white, on and under the oaks, firs, and redwoods.

I thought I noticed a LOT but was left wondering if I’ve ever really seen a forest before, and full of wonder at the variety and purposes of life forms on this earth.

Final sunset of 2023. It’s been quite a year- I

Final sunset of 2023. It’s been quite a year- I had an epic trip with my son, celebrated my mom’s 80th in London, had two vacations in Cabo, read an actual novel in Italian, and had the privilege of walking this beach almost every day. We also had three leaks to fix in the house and, the very worst, watch out little dog get sick and finally leave us on Halloween.

But here we are, ready for another day, another sunset, another beach walk, ready to welcome 2024 with my family.. Cheers and love to you all.

I have not shared all the stitching I’ve been do

I have not shared all the stitching I’ve been doing these past months. Inspired by @make_and_mend_with_erin and after a workshop with @therootconnection I have been using the many vintage silk kimono pieces from @yokodana_kimono to make several #kawandi pieces. This one is stitched with pink thread that came from my mom’s old stash. Old thread doesn’t seem to work well in my sewing machine, so it’s a good use for it. The piece makes me happy while I work at my desk. 💕
